Shiva (the auspicious one) also known as Mahadev is one of the main deities in Hinduism. The sculpture shows Shiva seated on a podium which is covered with tiger-skin, signifying the heavenly force’s triumph over animal instincts. The sculpture of Lord Shiva depicts him sitting with the trishula (trident), the Damru, the serpent king “Vasuki” around his neck, the adorning crescent moon, the holy river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the third eye on his forehead, and a pitcher of healing. The Bull (Nandi) has also been depicted sitting near Shiva’s foot, symbolising ‘Dharma’. Snakes can be seen peering out from the holes of the podium, symbolising the desires and passions. Lord Shiva is carrying the beads of Rudraksha, representing grace, mendicant life and meditation. The Sahasrara Chakra behind Shiva’s head represents the universal flow of energy and spiritual enlightenment.
