Panchamukhi literally means five- faced. Lord Hanuman is a great yogi who took the form of Panchamukhi to protect Lord Rama and Lakhman from Ahiravana (King of Pathala). It was said that Ahiravana could be killed only by extinguishing the five Lampskept in five different directions, so Hanuman took the form of Panchamukhi (Hayagriva, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hanuman), blew out all the lamps and killed Ahiravana. ‘Five’ represents the five cosmic elements, wind, water, sky, earth and fire. His five faces represent the five powerful deities; Varaha (wild boar) is an incarnation of Lord Narayana, faces north and grants dhana prapthi. Hayagriva is also an incarnation of Lord Narayana, faces upwards and grants wisdom and knowledge.
